China's prime minister doesn't play traditional role of officials

He is widely known as "the crying prime minister," although he prefers to be called "Grandpa Wen."
Over the past week, as Wen Jiabo toured earthquake-shattered northern Sichuan, he has hollered words of encouragement to those trapped beneath fallen buildings and shared tearful moments with orphans.
Since ascending to the post of prime minister in 2003, Wen, 65, has cultivated an image as a man of the people, a rarity in the pantheon of Chinese leaders, who are often seen as placing the authority of the Communist Party above the wants of individuals.
Now, as the nation grapples with its greatest natural disaster in three decades, Wen's persona as an empathetic, benevolent official has been cemented in popular lore.
He has become the public and inescapable face of a nation's grief since he arrived in the Sichuan Province less than two hours after the quake struck.
His high-profile humanitarian gestures, played again and again on television, have stood in stark contrast to the response of the rulers of Myanmar, who have been widely denounced for inaction toward the cyclone victims.
"He really loves the common people, and we can see this is not an act," said Wang Liangen, 72, a retired math teacher from Dujiangyan, who watched last week as the prime minister climbed over the wreckage of a school where hundreds of children were buried. "He has brought the people closer together, and brought the people closer to the government."
Some analysts say Wen's unusually public role may signal at least a modest shift in the way the Communist Party interacts with the citizenry.
"His quick response and immediate appearance will set a precedent for other officials," said Fang Ning, a political scientist at the China Academy of Social Science in Beijing.
Wen and his boss, President Hu Jintao, do seem inclined to show the world a kindler, gentler side of official China in advance of the Olympic Games.
After the international backlash over China's crackdown on ethnic Tibetans, the leaders have used the quake to show their authoritarian government can be responsive, even populist, at crucial moments.
"I think the earthquake really has the potential to change things," said Cheng Li, a senior fellow of the Brookings Institution, who argues that Wen — whose second appointed term expires in 2012 — is one of China's brightest and most pragmatic modern leaders.
Even before his performance in Sichuan, he said Wen was a champion for China's have-nots, an advocate of broadening the use of legal norms to help govern the country, and a bulwark against conservatives.
"A lot of Chinese have been overwhelmed by Wen and his sincerity, honesty and humanity," Li said. "Not many leaders have his qualities."
Wen often talks about democracy but is not a proponent of Western-style reforms. He remains an unwavering advocate of single-party rule, and he has taken a hard line on Tibet, blaming the Dalai Lama for instigating ethnic Tibetan unrest in March.
In public statements, he has said China is not afraid to use its military might to prevent Taiwan from declaring independence.
Despite Wen's well-tended image as an apolitical pragmatist, cynics note he did not earn his lofty post by playing nice.
"It takes a considerable amount of political skill and cunning to become premier of China," said Fred Teiwes, a professor of Chinese politics at the University of Sydney in Australia.
Wen is nothing if not the consummate survivor. A lifelong technocrat, he made his way to the top by pleasing his superiors, hewing to the party line and making few enemies.
A trained geologist who comes from a family of teachers, he served as a top aide to successive party bosses, Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang in the 1980s. Both leaders were purged after opposing harsh crackdowns on liberals, but Wen went on to serve in senior posts under more conservative successors.
As with most Chinese leaders, much about him remains a mystery. But he presents himself as self-effacing and penurious.
In contrast to Hu, an opaque and aloof statesman, Wen favors a colloquial speaking style, even if his comments always hew closely to the party script. Unlike his predecessor, Zhu Rongji, who was known for his jocular manner and snap decisions, Wen, when faced with tough economic-policy choices, will often spend days ruminating and consulting before deferring to fellow members of the ruling Politburo Standing Committee for a collective decision, party officials have said.
"He may not be a good leader," said Li, of Brookings, "but the perception out there is that he's a good person."

绝对民主导致绝对不自由

一个社会组织形态的实验。
1.依靠全民连线，自动搜集民意，全面启动沉默的大多数，忽略精英的存在。
方式不外乎两种：是通过潜意识的刺激获得答案，或者是每天充满了各种各样的投票。
2.投票的前提是：所有信息全部公开，这一切来自于对个人隐私的全面侵犯。但是个人有权利不接入系统，但个人接入的时间信息也同样提供给民众。所有组织的存在前提是为民众提供信息，从而保证了投票的全面客观。
3.投票结果必须得到执行，民意驱动天罚系统。
4.弱点：大多数人对小部分人的暴力依然存在，少数服从多数的准则依然有效。个人自由全面暴露在监督之下。所以，绝对民主带来绝对的不自由。
5.设置权重的结果必然是分化层次。信息的全面无法掩盖个人的处理能力参差不齐。
6.进化之路：无论它以什么形式，名号出现，都替代不了它的权力的本质。权力来源于支配，所以只要解决了支配的可能性，一切都以自愿为准则，就避免了人支配人的情况，但是，人将会把支配的权力交给机器吗？还是交给上帝？还是交给组织？

团结，爱国，慈善：一切都是暂时的

1 of 2more photos » When millions of Chinese paused for three minutes of silence Monday, they personified the surge in patriotism and charity that has swept this country since a massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake leveled large sections of Sichuan province in southwestern China.
Moments after the observance ended, chants of "Go, China, Go!" broke out in Tiananmen Square, where a Chinese military crackdown in 1989 left hundreds dead.
Sentiments have changed since the days of the anti-government protests.
"As Chinese we must be united," said a student. "We Chinese can do it!"
Some of Monday's demonstrators waved Chinese flags while others hoisted banners with slogans like "Rebuild Sichuan!" iReport.com: Thousands rally in Chengdu
Horrific scenes of death and devastation -- covered heavily by the local media -- have triggered a surge of patriotism and charity.
"When one is in trouble," the Chinese say, "help comes from all directions."
In Beijing, Chinese officials, entertainers, athletes and artists attended a marathon concert, giving donations and calling on the public to give more.
The benefit concert raised more than 1.51 billion yuan, or $216 million.

As of Sunday, Chinese nationals had donated more than 4.9 billion yuan ($700 million) in cash and goods for earthquake relief, according to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Live on Chinese TV, local businesses pledged to give money and build free housing for victims -- an unusual display of civic charity. As of last Saturday, Chinese enterprises had donated more than 3.5 billion yuan ($501 million) in cash and relief goods.
"Traditionally the Chinese people don't share as much with strangers. They share a great deal among friends and family, but not with strangers," according to China analyst Zhang Daxing.
At The Bookworm, a Beijing bookstore, residents drop off relief goods that are promptly shipped to disaster areas.
"My guess would be about 350 boxes, which include kid's clothes, adult clothes, a lot of sleeping bags, tents, dried food, shoes, that type of stuff," said store owner Alex Pearson.
Students in the Chinese capital have even taken to the street to collect donations.
"Although we cannot go to Sichuan to save them, we can still help them with donated money," one student said.
Analysts say this unprecedented display of charity is partly in response to the quick action already taken by Chinese officials to the emergency.
The Chinese media have repeatedly shown Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao comforting survivors. Many believe this has inspired Chinese residents to do what they can to help.
Meantime, a new image of China is emerging around the world.
"The earthquake changed China's international image from an oppressor or an authoritarian government to a victim of natural disaster and human tragedy," said Wenfang Tang, professor of political science at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Chinese, at least for now, are more united as a people and more charitable, as citizens pull together in the wake of a massive earthquake.

我们再来模拟一下地球人的思维方式。地球人的官方定义是什么？首先必须生活在地球的引力圈之内。其次必须拥有人所具有的一切特征，荣誉地球公民不考虑在内。再次，必须得到某个合法的组织的承认，这样他的社会关系才能得到确认，他作为人的一切才能有合法的档案。那么在这里面，哪一条最重要呢？从相当长时间来看，第三条，才是判断一个人是否是地球人的关键要素。因为，你没有得到一个组织的承认，说明你的一切社会关系都没有官方的认可。那么你又怎么能证明你是活生生的呢？

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- After more than a week of protests against what some Chinese see as the demonization of their nation by the West, there are indications the Chinese government is making an effort to rein in the anger.

The protesters have mostly been angry young men, their fury directed against the French supermarket chain Carrefour and against CNN. Some protests, on mainland China and elsewhere, have drawn thousands.

Carrefour became a target for protesters after anti-Chinese protests disrupted the Olympic torch relay in Paris earlier this month. Jin Jing, a disabled athlete, used her body to protect the torch as a pro-Tibetan demonstrator tried to grab it during the incident. Blog and text messages called on the Chinese to boycott French goods and businesses, particularly Carrefour.

The Chinese alleged on blogs and message boards that Carrefour had backed the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. Carrefour CEO Jose-Luis Duran, in an interview with the French weekly Journal de Dimanche, denied that, saying, "Carrefour has not given any direct or indirect support to any political or religious cause," according to a story on Forbes.com. Carrefour also put out a separate statement last week saying it has always supported the Beijing Olympics, according to the article.

The Chinese were already angry at Western media, including CNN, for what the government claimed was biased reporting over the recent Tibetan riots. CNN gained renewed focus for protesters after commentator Jack Cafferty called the Chinese "goons and thugs" and said the nation manufactures "junk."

You might have heard something about it. In fact, you almost certainly did. The demonstration was covered widely, as were other protests tied to the Olympic torch’s appearances in Paris and London.

By one measure—the amount of press coverage–the series of Olympic torch demonstrations appear to have been remarkably successful in drawing attention to the cause of Tibetan independence. Buzzwatch plunged into the databases to look at how much the topic has been covered in recent years and found a surge.

Since the beginning of 2008, major newspapers and magazines have referred to China and the subject of Tibet’s independence nearly 2,000 times. (Numbers were drawn from Factiva’s database of major news and business publications.) That’s more than double the number of mentions for all of 2007—and easily more than triple the number in 2006.

Looking specifically at press articles that mention the Olympic torch shows their impact.
More than 700 articles that mentioned China and Tibetan independence since the beginning of 2008 also referred to the torch—accounting for more than a third of China/Tibet stories overall.

Curious about whether the same phenomenon would be apparent in the blog world, Buzzwatch headed over to Google’s Blog Search. We found that the number of blog posts this year that specifically mention the torch along with China and Tibetan independence was about 18% of the China/Tibet posts overall—below the 37% figure seen in the traditional press. Oddly, according to Google, China and Tibetan independence barely registered in blog posts last year. (See chart.)

Of course, tallying media mentions this way is an imperfect art. For one thing, it’s impossible to judge intentions behind all of the articles: The Olympics were inevitably going to draw attention to all sorts of China-related issues, including Tibet. And no set of search terms can perfectly extract the desired articles. Databases change, too, making accurate comparisons over time difficult. (New blogs are added to Google, for instance, every day.)

But if you’ve flipped through a newspaper or watched TV news recently, you’ve probably seen enough yourself to conclude that the protests are working in their quest for notice. It’s a reminder that staged events are often successful in drawing the eyes of the media—sometimes more so than the underlying issues alone.

More importantly, this round of biased Western “reporting,” going as low as using doctored and mislabeled photos, has steeled the will of the Chinese against foreign interference with China’s internal issue. Hey, you see Nancy Pelosi and Washington negotiating with Russell Means any time soon?

Since there is no way the Chinese will give up Tibet, the Tibetan exiles have destroyed one of their remaining chances to engage in any type of meaningful negotiation with the Chinese government. Once the spot light goes off the Olympics you know that Chinese government will have a much more strict policy towards ethnic Tibetans, only this time every Chinese around the world would be supporting it.

It also gives West media a chance to examine itself on its bias towards something it is not familiar with. IMO, the west media is not too much better than the Chinese media. In China, the government does the brainwash job and they do a very poor job. Average Chinese just does not believe what the government says. The west media does a much better job in brainwash, they make people believe that they are objective and impartial.
Some of these protesters can not even spot Tibet on the map, it’s so hilarious! There was a guy shouting “Free Japan” downtown Paris and was stopped by the pro-Tibets!

In the light of the Olympic Torch, the true images of so called NPOs are slowly getting exposed as well. When all the dusts settling down and people enjoying sports, people will start to wonder who are behind these so-well orchestrated demonstrations. It was speculated that Dai Lai is/was under CIA’s payroll, you have to wonder who is funding these demonstrations.

What is most poignant is to juxtapose the case of the children saved from the FLDS raid this week - MOST of them are still crying, confused, and want to go back to the “families” and “lives” they were accustomed to. An interview with a FLDS case worker revealed that many of these kids turned out to be so very illiterate, when they were taken to the McDonalds, they could not order food by name, but had to point to pictures. I don’t hear the bleeding hearts of the biased Western press complaining about the raids by the U.S. government as “cultural genocide” there!! (The China press and the Chinese people do wonder about what kind of irresponsible government can allow so many kiddie rapes to occur and exist in the first place, but that’s another story.) The point is that these FLDS kids were brainwashed since birth that their way of life is IT, that having sex with older men at a tender age is OK, that being illiterate is normal, etc. That is in fact no different conceptually from the Tibetan monasteries taking in kids as young as 4 and pumping them full of the notion (silly rather) that the Dalai is a glorious “GOD KING.” So when the Western cameras are there, these same confused young “monks,” who had been abused and brainwashed by their monastery teachings since the tender age of 4 or 5, cry on cue and demand to be reunited with their SAVIOR and GOD KING. I am sure their emotions are real – but these are the results of years of hapless minors being brainwashed. That are just as ignorant and “illiterate” for anything other than the Gelupa sect’s scriptures. It truly befuddles to think that Beijing would allow this to happen.
Today nobody would blink an eye when a modern government prohibits minors from joining the Madrassas full time. It is universally considered proper to prevent unformed minds to be brainwashed. The same rule must be applied across the board to ALL religions, including the Tibetan monasteries. No child below the age of 18 is mentally ready to make the religious decision for himself. Give that a try for a couple of generations, and the assimilation will accelerate.

If Tibet wants to be free then let them. All this “Tibet did x and that was wrong too!” means nothing. So they did something bad in the past does not mean they don’t deserve freedom now.

The Chinese are thankful that the events subsequent to the terrorist riots clearly showed who are friendly and who are not. It was such a refreshing sight to see the torch and China honored in Buenos Aires. The torch is a guest of honor, and the Chinese the honored carrier of the flame this year. Our S. American friends have shown the world how to be a graceful host. If you can’t even make a guest feel welcome in your own home, it demonstrates your lack of upbringing.
BTW, have a grip on reality please - China has the largest number of netizens and the largest number of blogs in the world. And the Chinese actually use the net for education and other useful things, not just mostly for porn. Isn’t it refreshing to see how a nation can stand so staunchly behind its leaders? How does that compare with the approval ratings of your president? Your Congress? Don’t you find it curious that when Congress gets a 20% approval rating, it passes a cheap shot China bashing resolution 433 to 1, and Pelosi spends taxpayer money to fly to Dharamsala for a photo-op and more cheap shots at China?
The continued festive reception of the torch and the Chinese during the balance of the worldwide relay around the globe will refute the Western press’ wishful thinking that their willful lies against the great people of China will spread. Hey, the fact that the racist Westerners don’t have enough upbringing to be polite to guests, does not mean that the rest of the world would follow.

The western media’s one-sided report on the torch relay has served a purpose that it is completely unintended: it has tested the support that the Chinese government has among the Chinese inside and outside China, and I suspect that the government is very please with the obvious finding. No other means of survey could have delivered an approval rating like this media storm.
Not only that the Chinese made it very clear that they do not approve of the media’s ideological agenda in this coverage, I also expect that ordinary people around the world will start to say: wait a minute, this is Olympics, this is the one chance that we can celebrate what we have in common, rather than fight for differences.
It is too funny that the article says the protests “around the world.” Yeah, right, France, Britain, and the US are the definition of “the world.” It is this kind of lacking in self-awareness that the Chinese have found most amusing.
The torch relay will go on, and my sense is that there will be backlash coming from more sensible citizens of the west. I have a lot more faith in the common sense of ordinary people than the wisdom of the media.

To China, what is important is definitely not the party, but the continued successes that led up to the party and occasion for celebration. According to the IMF, China’s GDP growth would hardly change with this rigamarole by a few hundred silly ill-wishers.
China will be continue to rise. The China bashing clowns will expire sulking.

With all modern societies, assimilation is the ultimate solution for minority populations. It is inevitable that the ethnic minority will, and probably should, retain certain unique and identifiable cultural characteristics, such as the green garb for St. Patrick’s Day for the Irish, the quilt for the Scotsman, etc. But on the whole, society fully expects all of its denizens to subscribe to the ethic and logic of being integrated, productive members of society, in full support of the nation’s agenda. Towards that end, in cases where the minorities used to be disadvantaged in the ways of society as a whole, they should be given special dispensation, such as extra help and extra opportunities, so that they can catch up and compete on an equal basis with other citizens.
Secession, or so called “real autonomy,” or even the suggestion of the possibility thereof, would just breed distrust and resentment amongst the majority.
China already does lots extra for her 56 minorities.
What is different with the Tibetan situation is that the terrorists are demanding that all natives be returned under the control of theocratic administration, namely Lamaism. That’s actually an easy one - JUST SAY NO!

纵观当代所有国家，同化都是针对少数民族的最终解决方案。一个必然的结果是：少数民族将，并且很可能应当，保留部分独特的已经确认的文化特征，比如爱尔兰人帕特里克节的绿色服饰，苏格兰人的毛毯，等等。但是基本上，社会完全希望其所有的公民认同一个道德标准，有统一的逻辑性，是社会中充满活力的一员，全力支持国家的日常工作。最后，为了防止少数民族在社会整体发展中处于不利地位，他们应当被给予特别的对待，比如额外的帮助和更多的机会，从而使他们赶上，并且在一个平等的基础上与其他公民竞争。
分离主义，或者所谓的“自治”，或者是关于这些可能性的种种建议，只会导致多数民族的不信任和怨恨。
中国已经为56个少数民族做出了很多额外的贡献。
西藏的情形就跟恐怖分子要求所有本土居民回归到神权，即达赖，的控制下有什么区别？这其实很简单-不行！

Pravda bar on Wellington St. is no place to discuss the horrors of bourgeois entitlements; it's a place to enjoy bourgeois entitlements. The selection of vodkas is superb, and the art on the walls is gorgeous and fascinating. Removed from their intended spectacles, the propaganda posters of the Soviet Union become elegant, even soothing: chunky fists, splashes of red and everywhere Lenin, like an alien rat, with his huge head and tiny little goateed face. Only the context is disturbing, the echo of the spectacles these images once inhabited, the mass murder of tens of millions of innocents.

Communist chic has changed. It's meaner than it used to be. It's richer. In recent years the aesthetic has graduated from marijuana to cocaine. The brand of Che Guevara – radical socialism mixed with Latin American sensuality and youthful searching – can still move sweatshop t-shirts to teenagers who have read too much and not enough. But now we're seeing Lenin and Mao, icons of an entirely different order, appearing on celebrities' handbags and in high-end restaurants around the world. In the Double Happiness bar in Melbourne, Australia, for example, you can order a cocktail called "The Imperialist Running Dog." At the House of Mao in Singapore, you can order "Long March Chicken." Totalitarian status symbols are now a global form of luxury kitsch.

You can still find Che at the Pravda bar, in the hallway down by the bathrooms. His famous pose of melancholy defiance glares from one of his more famous quotations: "At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love." In the same hallway there's an image of the less well-known, but much more historically important revolutionary, Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky, the self-professed "Grand Inquisitor of the Revolution" and founder of the KGB. There's no quotation from Dzerzhinsky under his portrait, maybe because he said things like this: "We stand for organized terror...Terror is an absolute necessity during times of revolution." Even by the relatively early date of December 1918, Dzerzhinsky was running around a party drunkenly begging Lenin: "I have spilt so much blood that I no longer have any right to live. You must shoot me now." It's not exactly riding a broken-down motorcycle across South America, is it?

The new Communist chic is hardcore, a conscious association with monsters for the purposes of fashion, and it's a tough call whether insensitivity or ignorance is more to blame. Insensitivity to the mass murder of 100 million people is an enormous amount of sheer callousness. Then again, being totally ignorant of the evils of communism is hard to imagine.

Take the case of Cameron Diaz this past June. She had to apologize to the people of Peru for carrying a handbag bearing Maoist slogans while visiting Machu Picchu. She obviously was not aware of the Shining Path, the Maoist terrorist group that only recently stopped its generation-long campaign of bombings and assassinations across Peru. But surely she was aware, dimly, that there was something controversial about Mao? Surely rumours had drifted her way? She couldn't have checked the Internet before picking that bag out?

The website for Pravda bar reads "Join the Communist party" with the word Communist crossed out. Just so. Part of the appeal of hardcore Communist chic is the purity of its consumerism. Communism is so dead, it is saying, that we can take it as a joke. The new Communist chic is capitalism taking scalps. The only problem is that, at the moment, more than a billion people live in a Communist state and that state is thriving.

Open markets with China were supposed to lead to an open society, freedom of speech, eventually democracy and human rights. Instead the globalization of China has led to the globalization of China's atrocities in North Korea, Myanmar, Darfur.

The iconography is not irrelevant. It's not just dress-up. When Max Mosley, the president of Formula One racing, was allegedly caught on tape in a London dungeon indulging in a five-hour sadomasochistic orgy with five prostitutes, the outrage wasn't over his criminal sexual trafficking, but over his outfit. He dressed up as a Nazi, and spoke in a German accent. Now that's unforgivable.
